My Stop on Pat Sloan’s Mega Fun Book Tour!

November 25, 2016 by Ebony Love

Leave it to Pat Sloan – radio personality and quilting maven – to write another must-have book in her “Teach Me” series. This time, it’s a book about machine quilting, and I’m excited to tell you about it!

Teach Me to Machine Quilt Pat Sloan

Inside this book, Pat talks about not only the mechanics of quilting, but she walks you through all the tools you need to get started. And you don’t need anything fancy – just your regular sewing machine, a walking foot, and a free motion foot.

As you may know, I gave up on machine quilting a long time ago. Well, “gave up” is a bit of an exaggeration – I still have a straight-stitch table top machine that I pull out on occasion for small things, and I’ll do walking foot stuff on my main machine every once in a while. For the most part though, I do all my quilting on my long arm quilting machine. For me, the motion is more natural and I don’t feel restricted by the harp space. (Luckily Pat shows you how to handle your quilt even if you have limited harp space!)handling-the-quilt

Still, not everyone wants a Toyota Prius sitting in their living room, like I had to do in order to get this thing in the house. It’s a sacrifice in many ways, so getting the hang of quilting on your sewing machine has many benefits. You can use the extra space to store all the quilts you’ll be finishing!

What I like most about Pat’s book though is that it’s interactive! It’s such a challenge to teach someone to machine quilt if you have to explain it in words, or with just a few pictures. Instead of doing that, Pat recorded videos to go along with a lot of the concepts in the book. It’s like having Pat in class with you, showing you exactly what you need to do.

But Pat didn’t stop at just talking about quilting; she also included NINE quilt projects for you to make and practice your new quilting skills on.  My favorite project is Checkerboard Hearts of course, because… hearts!

Great review. I am learning to machine quilt. Been doing it about 5 years and still don’t have the courage to do the difficult designs. One day….
