Fly Me to the Moon Art Quilt Call for Entries

April 10, 2015 by Ebony Love

While I was at the Creative Arts Business Summit a few weeks ago, I met a quilt artist named Susanne Jones. She makes these amazing realistic art pieces, and I’m still trying to figure out how she made the roast beef in this quilt of hers.

You can see her obvious talent, so it’s no surprise that she’s got a book deal for an amazing art quilt journey to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and the space program.

Susanne is looking for artists to submit work that is space-themed around specific topics – astronauts, the Apollo missions, the moon walk, etc.  There are more details on her blog, so if you are interested in participating, you can get the details there. I hope you’ll consider submitting a project!

She’s also doing a daily review of the astronauts and missions, so you can find a ton of information there if you are space-minded.

My favorite space-related story is only loosely related to space, but it makes me chuckle every time I think about it. I was driving down the street one day at a normal pace (this was in my beloved Beetle), and an SUV wanted to play chicken with me. She was contemplating a left turn across the front of my car, and I could tell she was really trying to figure how she could do it without getting T-boned. Well, I think she realized the timing just wouldn’t work, but since I wasn’t going very fast, she decided to just flip me the bird for the entire time of my approach and passing in front of her. It’s funny how quickly these situations develop, but time seemed to slow down so I could take it all in.

My response? I flipped HER the “live long and prosper” greeting from Star Trek as I passed in front of her. I like to think she’s still puzzling that one out.

What’s your favorite space-related story?

A lovely giggle with my coffee this AM, thanks. And yes, that quilt is so amazing!
