The Downton Abbey Mystery Quilt Along Begins November 10th!
If you love fabric, and you love Downton Abbey, you are in for a treat this fall!Everyone is eagerly awaiting the release of Series 4 of Downton Abbey. It doesn’t come here to the US until January, and that’s just a really long time to wait! So I thought a Quilt Along to pass the time would be really great, and with Andover Fabrics releasing a line of Downton-inspired fabrics, the timing couldn’t be more perfect! I’m sure you have a ton of questions, so let’s get going!
What is a Mystery Quilt Along?
Well first, let’s talk about what a quilt along is, and then I’ll explain the mystery part. I’ve designed a quilt based on Downton Abbey, and I think lots of people would love to have a quilt to curl up in to watch the show. So I’m inviting you to join me in making the blocks for the quilt. I’ll be posting instructions and tutorials for you on my blog, and the awesome thing is that you can make the quilt in the colors/fabrics inspired by your favorite character. As I post each block, you’ll see the blocks colored in different colorways so you can adapt it to suit your tastes. I’m known widely as a die-cutting quilter, and therefore all my quilts & instructions are written for die-cutting, but rotary cutting instructions are always included. No matter how you plan to cut, all are welcome! Now what makes this a Mystery Quilt Along is that you will only see the quilt one block at a time! So you won’t know exactly what you’re making until the very end. This is exciting for some, and fear-inspiring for others, but rest assured that many of my trusted advisors (as well as Andover) have seen the quilt designs in all four colorways, and everyone loves them.
When does the Mystery Quilt Along start?
You can register now, but the actual Mystery Quilt Along begins on November 10th, once the Downton Abbey fabrics start shipping to stores. I’ll be posting the fabric requirements, full schedule, and details on how to join the live Google/Twitter chats.
How long is the Mystery Quilt Along?
Here is the beautiful thing! I’ve planned the Quilt Along in two parts – the weeks leading up to Series 4, and the weeks following the series premiere. We’re starting with enough time for us to rewatch Season 3, so there will be a block revealed every week for 7 weeks. The finished quilt top will be revealed on January 5th, the day that Downton Abbey Series 4 arrives in the US. It seems like a long time for a quilt along, but if you are waiting for Downton Abbey, I think you’ll find the time more bearable if you’re quilting. After the series premieres, you can also join in for a live Google Hangout and Twitter chat to watch the episodes every Sunday and work on finishing your quilt. I’ll host the live events every Sunday throughout the season.
What if I miss a week or fall behind?
I’m releasing new blocks once a week on Sundays, so it’s up to you how you want to manage your time. Feel free to work at your own pace! The only date that you need to pay attention to is January 12th; on that date, all the instructions will be taken down & will only available as a single paid download or offered to shops as a Block of the Month. After all, once the quilt is revealed, the mystery is over! Even if you can’t make the block that week, I highly recommend you download the instructions so you don’t have to pay for it later! Here are the links to posts I’ve written about the Quilt Along in case you missed anything! [table “10” not found /]
How do I get the Downton Abbey fabric?
Lots of local quilt shops will be carrying the Downton Abbey fabrics, so check with your LQS to see if they will have them. If you can’t get the fabric locally, there are also several places online (like The Fat Quarter Shop) who will carry the fabrics. To make it super-easy for you though, I’m also offering a very, very limited number of kits cut especially for the quilt along. You can reserve your kit by visiting my Etsy shop. Choose the character you want (
Dowager Countess (sold out), Lady Edith, Lady Mary (sold out), or Lady Sybil) and the type of kit (yardage only, or die-cut blocks.) I also have backing kits available as well. The backing kit is sold out!
Quilt kits are anticipated to begin shipping the week of November 18th.
Do I have to use the Downton Abbey fabric in my quilt?
It’s your quilt. Do what you want! I just think it is really cool to have a Downton Abbey quilt made with Downton Abbey fabrics.
Are there prizes?
Of course there are prizes! There will be weekly prizes, as well as prizes at the end, but what the prizes are you’ll just have to wait until we start to find out.
